How it works
The Electricity Bill & Appliance Cost Calculator provides an exact breakdown of residential electric utility charges according to official tiered tariff brackets, meter maintenance fees, fuel surcharges, and Value Added Tax (VAT). It also enables homeowners and renters to isolate the monthly operating cost of individual household appliances like air conditioners, water heaters, and refrigerators.
Understanding Electric Meter Consumption (Kilowatt-Hours - kWh)
Electrical utility providers bill residential consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWh). One kilowatt equals 1,000 Watts of electrical power. Operating an electrical appliance rated at 1,000 Watts for exactly one hour consumes 1.0 kWh of energy on your electric meter.
Daily Consumption (kWh) = [Appliance Power (Watts) × Daily Operating Hours] ÷ 1,000 Monthly Consumption (kWh) = Daily kWh × 30 days Appliance Monthly Cost = Monthly kWh × Effective Tariff Rate per kWhWorked Example 1 (Saudi Arabia — SEC Residential Tariff): A household consumes 1,000 kWh in a billing month under the standard residential slab (up to 6,000 kWh at 0.18 SAR/kWh):
- Energy Consumption Charge = 1,000 kWh × 0.18 SAR = 180.00 SAR.
- Meter Service Fee = 11.50 SAR.
- Value Added Tax (15% VAT) = (180 + 11.5) × 15% = 28.73 SAR (see VAT calculator).
- Total Monthly Electric Bill = 180 + 11.50 + 28.73 = 220.23 SAR.
Worked Example 2 (Egypt — EEHC Residential Tariff): A residential monthly consumption of 150 kWh falls into Tier 3 (0 to 200 kWh, recalculated flat at 0.95 EGP/kWh):
- Energy Charge = 150 kWh × 0.95 EGP = 142.50 EGP.
- Customer Service Fee = 6.00 EGP.
- Total Monthly Electric Bill = 142.50 + 6.00 = 148.50 EGP.
Residential Electric Slab Tariffs by Country
Utility rate structures in major jurisdictions are outlined in the reference table below:
| Country & Regulatory Authority | Monthly Consumption Slabs (kWh) | Rate per kWh | Taxes & Mandatory Service Surcharges |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saudi Arabia (Saudi Electricity Company - SEC / WEREC) |
1 to 6,000 kWh | 0.18 SAR (18 Halalas) | Meter fee (11.5 to 15 SAR) + 15% VAT on total invoice |
| Above 6,000 kWh | 0.30 SAR (30 Halalas) | ||
| Egypt (EgyptERA / EEHC 2026 Tariff) |
Tiers 1 & 2 (0 – 100 kWh) | 0.68 to 0.78 EGP | Tiered customer service fee (1.0 to 40.0 EGP); no sales tax on residential power |
| Tier 3 (0 – 200 kWh) | 0.95 EGP (all units) | ||
| Tiers 4 & 5 (201 – 650 kWh) | 1.55 to 1.95 EGP | ||
| Tiers 6 & 7 (> 650 kWh) | 2.10 to 2.23 EGP (unsubsidized) | ||
| United Arab Emirates (Dubai Electricity & Water Authority - DEWA) |
1 to 2,000 kWh | 0.28 AED (0.23 + 0.05 fuel) | Fuel surcharge (0.05 AED/kWh) + 5% VAT |
| 2,001 to 4,000 kWh | 0.33 AED (0.28 + 0.05 fuel) | ||
| Kuwait (Ministry of Electricity & Water - MEW) |
Private residential homes | 0.002 KWD (2 Fils) | State subsidized; commercial/apartments billed at 5 Fils/kWh |
Household Appliance Power Ratings & Typical Monthly Energy Costs
To identify the primary energy consumers in your residence, refer to the representative wattage ratings below:
| Appliance Type | Nominal Power (Watts) | Daily Usage Hours | Estimated Monthly Energy (kWh) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Split AC 1.5 HP / 12,000 BTU (see AC calculator) | 1,200 – 1,500 W | 8 – 10 hrs | 280 – 360 kWh |
| Split AC 2.25 HP / 18,000 BTU | 1,800 – 2,200 W | 8 – 10 hrs | 430 – 520 kWh |
| Electric Water Heater (50 Liters) | 1,500 – 2,000 W | 3 – 4 hrs | 135 – 180 kWh |
| Modern Refrigerator (18 cu ft) | 150 – 250 W | Cyclic (approx 10 hrs) | 45 – 75 kWh |
| Automatic Washing Machine (hot cycle) | 1,500 – 2,200 W | 1.5 hrs | 65 – 95 kWh |
| Electric Kettle | 1,800 – 2,200 W | 0.5 hr | 27 – 33 kWh |
| Steam Iron | 1,200 – 1,800 W | 0.5 hr | 18 – 27 kWh |
| 55-inch 4K LED Smart Television | 80 – 120 W | 6 hrs | 15 – 22 kWh |
Practical Strategies to Lower Your Monthly Utility Bill
- Eliminate Phantom / Vampire Loads: TVs, soundbars, microwave clocks, and computer peripherals in standby mode consume 5% to 10% of household electricity without active use. Use smart power strips to cut standby power.
- Set Water Heater Thermostats to 55°C (130°F): Excessively high temperature settings accelerate lime scale deposition and cause continuous heat loss through tank walls.
- Run Full Laundry Loads: Washing machines consume roughly the same motor and water heating energy for a half-empty drum as for a full drum.
- Integrate with Your Household Budget: Track utility bills alongside other fixed expenses in the salary calculator to manage your monthly disposable income.
