How it works
Building long-term wealth and retirement security relies on two mathematical engines working together: consistent monthly contributions (Dollar-Cost Averaging) and reinvested compound returns. This calculator models your portfolio’s growth year by year across index funds, equities, Sukuk/bonds, or REITs, and adjusts your final balance for inflation so you know both your nominal balance and its real purchasing power in today’s currency.
Historical Annual Return Benchmarks by Asset Class
Use the benchmark ranges below to select a realistic annual rate of return for your investment horizon:
| Asset Class / Investment Vehicle | Historical Annual Return | Volatility / Risk | 10,000 Initial + 500/mo Over 15 Years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sovereign Sukuk, Treasury Bills & Money Market | 4.5% to 5.5% / year | Very Low | 154,794 (at 5% return) |
| Income REITs & Dividend Blue-Chip Portfolios | 6.0% to 7.5% / year | Moderate | 184,380 (at 7% return) |
| Broad Equity Index Funds (S&P 500 / Global / TASI) | 8.0% to 10.0% / year | Moderate–High | 206,074 (at 8% return) |
| Growth & Technology Equity Portfolios | 11.0% to 13.0% / year | High | 279,233 (at 11% return) |
Why Inflation Adjustment Matters for Long-Term Investors
A portfolio balance of 500,000 twenty years from now will not buy what 500,000 buys today if consumer prices rise by 3% per year. The calculator divides your final nominal balance by the cumulative inflation factor (1 + Inflation Rate)^Years to display your Real Inflation-Adjusted Value in today’s purchasing power.
An investor starts with 10,000 and contributes 500 at the end of every month into an index fund earning 8% annually (compounded monthly) for 15 years, with 3% annual inflation:
- Total Principal Contributed out of Pocket: 10,000 + (500 × 180 months) = 100,000.00.
- Total Compound Investment Profit: 106,073.55 (compound returns exceed total cash contributed).
- Final Nominal Portfolio Balance: 206,073.55.
- Total Return on Contributed Capital (ROI): 106.07%.
- Real Value in Today’s Purchasing Power (at 3% inflation): 132,271.18.
The Rule of 72: How Fast Does Your Lump Sum Double?
To quickly estimate how many years it takes for an initial lump-sum investment to double without additional contributions, divide 72 by your annual return percentage. At an 8% annual return, capital doubles every 9 years (72 ÷ 8 = 9); at 10%, it doubles every 7.2 years.
